Mr. Ham, History, and the Heart of Iowa: Exploring Ottumwa’s Unexpected Delights
July 15, 2025
Staff at the Meet Ottumwa Visitor Center consistently answer a common question from travelers looking to explore their southeast Iowa community: “What’s up with the pig mannequin in the suit and top hat?”
Mr. Ham is the pig in question, mascot of the former John Morrell and Co. Meat Packing Plant, which played a significant role in the development of Ottumwa for nearly a century (1877-1973).
After many years of greeting visitors to the Morrell Co. plant, Mr. Ham now plays a similar role at Ottumwa’s visitors center for those looking to learn about all that Wapello County offers.
A rich history, complete with peculiarities like Mr. Ham, a vibrant shopping and dining scene, plenty of outdoor recreation, and a welcoming, small-town atmosphere make Ottumwa the perfect destination for family fun and exploration.
“We keep a pin map of where all our visitors are coming from, and it’s just spreading around the country,” said Laura Carrell, executive director of Meet Ottumwa.
“Until they’ve experienced our small county in southeast Iowa, they don’t know what’s here. And once they’ve experienced us, they keep coming back to do more.”
History Exclusive to Ottumwa
Ottumwa has a prominent place in the iconic television series M*A*S*H, based on Richard Hooker’s 1968 novel.
A prominent fictional character from the novel, movie, and series, Walter “Radar” O’Reilly, hails from Ottumwa.
Meet Ottumwa and the Iowa Heartland History Connection, Wapello County’s historical museum, pay homage to Radar with exhibits for visitors to enjoy.
“That character was based on an actual person who lived here in Ottumwa,” Carrell said. “He served in the military with the book’s author, so the very first sentence of the very first page of the book talks about Ottumwa. Many people want to come through just to see where Radar was from and we can share the story behind the story.”
Another unique part of Wapello County’s history is the American Gothic House and Center in Eldon, southeast of Ottumwa. It was this still-standing home that artist Grant Wood (an Iowa native) drew inspiration from in his famous painting, American Gothic, in 1930.
Props are on-site at the house for visitors to recreate the iconic painting with their own twist.
Visitors looking to fully immerse themselves in Ottumwa’s history should consider the Wapello County Civil War Trail, which includes stops at the graves of three veterans who won the Medal of Honor.
Distinctive Local Shopping and Flavor
Visitors to Ottumwa will find a host of local business owners and entrepreneurs.
Stop by Spud’s Emporium of Comics and Games, Empire Cards, Corner Collectibles, and the Flea Market on Main Street for unique treasures, antiques, and collectibles.
Appanoose Rapids Mercantile is a high-quality boutique, while the Quincy Place Mall is a popular destination offering diverse dining, shopping, and entertainment options.
“We always tell people to look local first,” Carrell said. “You’re going to come to Ottumwa and you’re going to find something that you won’t find anywhere else. There are dozens of just little personality places where you can get a cup of coffee, read a book, get local souvenirs, clothing – things you’re not going to find in a big city.”
Recreation and Accommodation
Outdoor fans can enjoy hiking or biking 16 miles of the Wapello County Trail System. Ottumwa itself is also home to nearly 20 public parks. Golfing, disc golfing, fishing along the Des Moines River, and visiting the Pioneer Ridge Nature Area and Center are all additional popular outdoor activities in Wapello County.
In terms of accommodations, Ottumwa and Wapello County are home to charming B&Bs, public campgrounds, glamping cabins, and over half a dozen national hotel chains, each offering their version of comfort or rustic appeal.
Ottumwa is a magical place for visitors of all backgrounds to explore.
“If you’re interested in history, the outdoors, music, activities with kids – we pretty much have something for everybody,” Carrell said.
