Celebrating Freedom and Heritage: Juneteenth in Ottumwa
June 13, 2024
Ottumwa, Iowa, known for its rich history and diverse community, is gearing up for its annual Juneteenth celebration. This significant event commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and honors the cultural contributions of African Americans. Juneteenth, observed on June 19th, marks a day of reflection, education, and festivity. As the longest-running African-American holiday, Juneteenth is "America's second Independence Day." This year's celebration in Ottumwa promises to be a vibrant testament to history and community.
A Day of Celebration and Reflection
Juneteenth in Ottumwa is not just a celebration of freedom but of the African American journey and achievements. Dr. Jeff Hendred, Assistant Pastor and Principal of a local middle school, is on the Juneteenth Committee and has been actively organizing the event for the past two years. Dr. Hendred shared insights into the upcoming festivities: “We've been talking about having an opportunity to highlight the history of African Americans and Ottumwans who have made significant contributions. This year, various events will be held throughout the day, starting at noon. We'll showcase individuals who have advanced the African American cause by four o'clock. We also have a lineup of diverse vendors and performances, including a choir from Des Moines and African dancers. It's going to be a powerful event.”
The day will feature various activities, from educational sessions and historical presentations to vibrant performances by local and visiting artists.
Buxton's Legacy and Community Pride
A particular highlight of this year's Juneteenth celebration is a tribute to Buxton, Iowa. This once-thriving African American community was pivotal in the region's history. Dr. Hendred elaborated on this aspect:
"Buxton was a coal mining town with a flourishing black presence and established businesses. Unfortunately, it became almost nonexistent after the coal mining ended. This year, Ms. Rachelle Chase, the founder of Uniting Through History and an author on Buxton, will be our emcee. She will share Buxton's remarkable story and African Americans' contributions in Ottumwa and Iowa. It's an opportunity for people to witness not just the entertainment but to feel pride in our community's legacy of African Americans."
A puppet show will also recount Buxton's history, offering a creative and engaging way to learn about this significant part of Iowa's heritage.
Growing Community Engagement
The response from the Ottumwa community has been overwhelmingly positive. From a modest turnout in the first year, the event has grown to attract around 300 attendees, and expectations are even higher this year. Dr. Hendred expressed optimism about the growing interest:
"The community has responded very well. The first year saw a small crowd, but attendance swelled to about 300 in the second year. With the addition of a music festival this year, the River Roots Music Festival, we anticipate an even larger crowd. The momentum we've built over these years and the appeal of the concert will draw more people to enjoy and celebrate the event. The music concert will be a fitting conclusion to a day celebrating freedom, culture, and community.”
Looking to the Future
Dr. Hendred summed up the significance of Juneteenth in Ottumwa: "We are very excited about the possibilities for the Ottumwa community in the future. Juneteenth is more than a celebration; it's a testament to our progress and a commitment to a more inclusive future."
This Juneteenth, Ottumwa will come alive with music, dance, and stories of resilience, offering a space for reflection and celebration of African American history and culture.
Join the community on June 19th to honor this pivotal moment in history and to celebrate the rich tapestry of cultures that make up Ottumwa.
