Celebrating Workforce Development Month: A Deep Dive into iJAG's Transformative Impact in Ottumwa, Iowa
October 3, 2024
Workforce Development Month offers the perfect backdrop to highlight the incredible work of organizations like iJAG (Iowa Jobs for America's Graduates), especially in places like Ottumwa, Iowa, where they're making strides in connecting students with their future careers. iJAG is the only statewide organization recognized by the Iowa Department of Labor as a Quality Pre-Apprenticeship Program; it is also a collaborative partner on special initiatives with other youth- and education-focused organizations such as Future Ready Iowa, the Governor’s STEM Council Advisory and the National Governors Association Work-Based Learning Core. Amber Heckart, an iJAG Specialist in Ottumwa, shared her insights into how iJAG operates and its positive influence on students and the community.
Bridging the Educational and Workforce Divide
In Ottumwa, iJAG aims to arm students with the essential skills they need to thrive in today's workforce. Amber shared, "At iJAG, we're all about helping students discover their strengths and guiding them toward becoming the dependable, skilled employees that today's employers seek." This mission unfolds through diverse initiatives, including hands-on service projects that allow students to apply their skills in real-world settings. "These projects are a win-win; they not only help students practice crucial workplace skills but also showcase their talents to the community and potential employers," Amber added. This approach boosts students' readiness for the workforce and cements their connection to their community.
Another critical strategy is job shadowing, which allows students to glean insights from professionals in fields they're curious about. "It's all about giving students a clearer picture of their chosen career paths while also helping them earn elective credits towards graduation," said Amber.
Celebrating Success and Nurturing Potential
Amber recounted numerous success stories highlighting the profound impact iJAG has had on its students. "Every iJAG student carries with them a unique tale of triumph and, yes, sometimes setbacks. But it's these very stories of resilience and determination that underscore the transformative power of support and guidance," she reflected. Heckart shared specific examples of students’ achievements: "I have had twelve students complete Alliant Energy’s online coursework, which led to interviews for careers at Alliant Energy, and five students completed the Future Ready Iowa Summer EMT program. Additionally, 25 students earned their OSHA certification, and six students have been trained in mental health first aid by the Teen Mental Health First Aid Education Agency". These certifications and training are essential in preparing students for various career paths and ensuring they have the qualifications to succeed in the workforce.
But the support doesn't end at graduation. Amber and her team remain a steadfast ally to iJAG alumni, offering guidance and resources to ensure their continued success in their personal and professional lives. Amber mentions, “ iJAG also collaborates with the schools in Ottumwa by having an iJAG Specialist for 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, and 12th grades; we also have two specialists at Gateway Learning Center. We have five iJAG programs in the Ottumwa Community School District. We can provide additional support for youth in a variety of areas. We encourage and provide extra time in the iJAG classroom to help students complete other classroom work. We support various services that Ottumwa Schools provide; since we do have smaller rosters, we can provide a one-on-one supportive environment for each student’s needs and abilities.”
As Workforce Development Month spotlights the critical work of organizations like iJAG, it's clear that their contributions are invaluable in paving the way for a brighter future for our youth. Through hands-on learning, career exploration, and unwavering support, iJAG prepares students for the workforce and empowers them to chart their futures with confidence and purpose.
