Embracing Tradition: Ottumwa's First Day of the Dead Celebration
October 23, 2024
Honoring Heritage and Family
On November 2, 2024, Greater Ottumwa Partners in Progress, in collaboration with our local League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), is hosting its first annual Day of the Dead (or Día de los Muertos) celebration. This vibrant Mexican tradition, rooted in the belief that the spirits of our departed loved ones return to visit us once a year, is a joyful reminder of the importance of family, history, and togetherness.
Day of the Dead altars, adorned with marigolds, candles, photographs, favorite foods, and mementos of loved ones, symbolize the heartfelt welcome we extend to these returning spirits. Traditionally, families visit cemeteries to clean and decorate graves, but memorials are built at home when that's not possible. Stories are shared, memories are passed down to younger generations, and the day serves as a reminder that while life may be brief, it is worth celebrating.
An Evening of Celebration and Community
We are excited to offer an evening filled with food, fun, and family-friendly activities for Ottumwa's inaugural celebration. The event will be held at the Knight of Columbus Hall from 5 pm to 9 pm, where attendees can experience authentic Mexican dishes such as tamales, sweet bread, chips, and salsa. A free-will donation is encouraged, and half of the proceeds will benefit LULAC, which supports scholarships for post-secondary education students.
We invite everyone to bring their altars for display, allowing the community to unite and honor family traditions. Music, face painting, and kids activities will enhance the festive atmosphere, making the evening a true celebration for all ages.
A Contest for Creativity and Culture
The Catrina contest will highlight the evening. Participants can showcase their creativity by dressing up as this iconic Día de los Muertos figure. The Catrina, a well-dressed skeleton symbolizing the blending of life and death, has become a beloved emblem of the celebration.
Prizes for the contest include:
- 1st place: $100 gift card to Cerro Grande
- 2nd place: $50 gift certificate
- 3rd place: $25 gift certificate
A silent auction will also feature generous donations from local businesses. This will provide another way for attendees to engage with and support the community.
Supporting Education and Tradition
This event celebrates cultural heritage and offers an opportunity to give back. Half of the proceeds from the evening will go to LULAC, a local organization dedicated to empowering Latinx students through scholarships. By participating, attendees enjoy a fun-filled night and contribute to educational opportunities for future leaders.
